Yes, it's GNOME, and it's better than ever and it's even on time, so, all you *nix savvy Deviants, go forth, and build(or wait for some bins)!

The Release Notes

GNOME 2.4 expands the offerings of the popular free software desktop, with a new web browser based on the most standards-compliant rendering engine available, improved accessibility tools, a number of new applications to make day-to-day desktop use easier and a continued commitment to creating a computing environment that "just works".

GNOME 2.4 includes 11 new applications and more than 100 user-requested enhancements, evidence of the user-driven community development process used to create each GNOME release.

GNOME runs on a variety of platforms, including GNU/Linux (commonly called Linux), Solaris, HP-UX, BSD and Apple's Darwin. GNOME includes powerful features such as world-class smooth text rendering, a first-class accessibility infrastructure, and a complete internationalization infrastructure that includes support for bi-directional text.

GNOME provides a user-friendly environment that "just works" for everyday users, without excess complexity, while at the same time providing the rich flexibility experienced developers demand. We have tried to avoid unnecessary complications or obscure features, sticking instead to a clear, unified vision of a usable, powerful desktop.

i'm very much a GNOME and GTK man personally, haven't touched KDE in a long while, of course netghost can run P$ 5.5 on linux, but i don't see any point personally, i was forced to use it for something a while back, and it's simply useless in comparison to GIMP(ok, so CMYK isn't great yet) ;)

in fact, i don't think there are many apps at all on win32 that can't be found drop in replacements for on Linux thesedays :)

Looks great, although I'm realy new in that. Me and a friend started to Linux thing two days ago. We downloaded Mandrake 9.1 cos it seems to be an easy to use Linux. It's only 3 CD's ( I know there are others with less) and has cool GUI interfaces. Played around with it today to see what it has.

I downloaded some KDE and Gnome adds for it and will try them as soon as I get Mantrake runing on my computer. I have to figure out how it works.

Now it'll be a good comparesion of me and my friend. What I mean is, we'll see who'll figure out the Linux thing earlier.

I love the text smoothing, it looks great on CRT monitors, compared to the " ClearType" version of Windows XP.

Also I like the Bitstream Vera fonts. You can get them for free, even if you don't want GNOME.

it's good to see a linux-related post for a change.

i like gnome, though normally run openbox with
gnome-settings-daemon beneath it to get pretty
fonts and nice theming. i mostly use gtk2 apps
though and enjoy nautilus as a file manager.

gnome 2.4 should appear soon in portage. w00t.
